Subject selection information sessions

Most of the Faculty of Science teaching departments will be hosting information sessions where they will provide course advice and detailed question and answer sessions about subject selection.

In some cases, departments are also offering students the opportunity to meet with an academic member of staff to discuss their subject choices.

When are the 2007 subject selection information sessions?

Course information week will be held from Monday 2 - Friday 6 October 2006. All departments teaching majors are holding Subject Selection information sessions, with the following exceptions:

Please note that Mathematics and Statistics will be holding their information session in the following week on Tuesday 10 October (details below).

Which teaching departments are offering individual appointments?

Department Details
Anatomy & Cell Biology Anatomy and Cell Biology will be available from Monday 9th to Friday 13th October. Students will be able to register for an appointment on the booking sheets in the Anatomy and Cell Biology student admin office, room E727, level 7 of the Medical Building. Also, for the 300-level course advice session to be held on Friday 6th October.
Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

200-level: email course coordinator to negotiate a suitable time.

300-level: Individual course advice sessions will be held in Conference Room 1 (immediately behind Trikojus lecture Theatre, Biochemistry Annexe):

Biotechnology Students with specific questions after reading the Biotechnology section of the Undergraduate Studies Handbook should contact Dr. Ed Newbigin , Biotechnology Coordinator directly.
Biomedical Science Students should contact their stream coordinator if they have any questions regarding subject selection.
Botany Students can register for individual course advice appointments on booking sheets located in the foyer of the Botany School near the reception area. Appointments will be held 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday 9 – Friday 13 October in Room 200, Botany Building.
Chemistry On-call course advice appointments will be held Tuesday 10 October – Thursday 12 October from 10.00am – 1.00pm in the Chemistry Learning Centre. No need to register – students can just attend during the times allocated.
Computer Science & Software Engineering Individual student appointments will be held from Monday 9 October - Friday 13 October in Room 4.13, ICT Building. Students can book an appointment with Jenny Thomas online at https://www.cs.mu.oz.au/cgi-bin/.
Earth Sciences A timetable will be placed on the doors of all academic staff indicating when they have time available for course advice appointments. Students may then sign up for appointments up to one week in advance.
Environmental Science Please contact Michael Keough Environmental Science Coordinator directly.
Genetics Students may make an appointment by placing their name on the sign-up sheet in the foyer/reception, Genetics Building during the week of 2–6 October

Mathematics & Statistics

Course advisors will be available for individual consultations on a first come first served basis. No Appointments necessary for any of these valuable planning sessions - just turn up! There will be three sessions to choose from:

  • 1:00pm – 4:00pm on Monday 16 October
  • 10:00am – 2:00pm on Tuesday 17 October
  • 1:00pm – 4:00pm on Wednesday 18 October

Microbiology & Immunology Individual course advice appointments available in the week of Monday 9 - Friday 13 October. Booking sheets will be available from 2 October in the Heather Jenkins Library, 1st floor (just inside the main doors), Department of Microbiology and Immunology
Optometry & Vision Sciences Students wishing to register for an individual course advice appointment should contact Bronwyn Thomson (email: admin@optometry.unimelb.edu.au).
Pharmacology Students can register for individual course advice appointments at the Pharmacology Reception, Level 8 Medical Bldg.
Physics Daily from 2.00 – 5.00 pm Monday 9 - Friday 13 October in Staff Room (Level 7), Physics Bldg. There will be a board set up in the School of Physics foyer on the ground floor with pages for each day where students can sign up for an appointment.

Psychology Students can come to the 12th Floor, Redmond Barry Building at any time for psychology advice - no appointment is necessary. Please refer to the Psychology entry in the Undergraduate Studies Handbook.
Zoology Individual course advice appointments will be held Tuesday 10 October – Thursday 12 October. Students can register for an appointment on the booking sheet in the Zoology foyer.
