The University provides an enormous range of support services to assist students with issues that they may encounter during their student life. These services are available to assist students to study effectively and achieve their academic, career and personal goals.
Study Support
Study Skills Seminars
The Academic Skills Unit (formerly the Language and Learning Skills Unit), in conjunction with the Science Student Centre offer a series of special seminars that provide science focussed tips and advice to enhance the study skills of science students.
The Academic Skills Unit (ASU) helps all undergraduate and postgraduate students develop a broad range of academic skills.

Individual Tutorials
Students can make a booking with a student adviser for help with study and organisational strategies, academic writing skills, managing assessment, graduate skills and ESL (English as a Second Language) assistance.
Location – The Science Student Centre ASU Tutorial room is located in room G44 in the Old Geology (Building 155).

Special Consideration
Students can apply for special consideration for their studies if they meet the eligibility requirements. Find out more about special consideration.
Student advisers
Student advisers are available to provide advice on a range of study-related issues and may refer students to appropriate support services across the University. Advice includes course planning and strategies for dealing with personal difficulties which are affecting study.

Support for students with physical illness, disability or mental health conditions
Student Centre Disability Contact Officer
The Science Student Centre has several disability contact officers (DCOs) who can provide advice and support to students who are unsure about where to seek advice or need assistance in managing an issue.

Students who have a long-term or permanent impairment that affects their capacity to perform academically should register their details with the Disability Liaison Unit (DLU) before approaching a DCO. The DLU provides support for students with a temporary or permanent impairment, a mental health condition or long-term medical condition.
Student Centre Mental Health Contact Officers
The Science Student Centre has a number of mental health contact officers (MHCO) who have undergone awareness training on issues that affect students with mental illnesses. They have been trained to provide advice and support to students who are unsure about where to seek advice or need assistance in managing an issue.

Alternative examination arrangements
Students with physical or mental health conditions that will impact on their capacity to perform in exams may request alternative examination arrangements. These include:
- alternative venues (e.g. a separate, smaller exam room);
- extra reading and/or writing time;
- rest breaks;
- alternative exam format/methods (e.g. larger print, having a scribe to write your answers, typing your answers on a computer).
In extreme cases, exams may be deferred to a later date. To make an alternative examination arrangement, contact the Science Student Centre.
Students with a permanent disability, medical or mental health condition
Contact the Disability Liaison Unit at least one month prior to the publication of the exam timetable (usually available 1 May and 1 October each year).
Students with a temporary illness (e.g. glandular fever) or injury (e.g. broken wrist)
