• Elected Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science:
  • Professor Tony Bacic, Botany
  • Professor Sven (Ole) Warnaar, Mathematics & Statistics (in absentia)
• Academy of Science medal - Dr Michael McCarthy, Botany won the Fenner Medal for research in biology
• Officer of the Order of Australia - Professor Pauline Ladiges, Head, School of Botany. Her OAM is in recognition of her service to the advancement of botanical science and research, particularly in the field of taxonomy and plant systematics, and to the conservation of Australian flora and fauna.

• The inaugural Future Generation Fellow appointed in the School of Chemistry - Dr Amanda Barnard
• 2008 Rennie Memorial Medal of the RACI - Spencer Willams, Chemistry
• Veronica Borrett, Manager, Bio21, who was nominated by ASNO (the Australian Safeguards and Non-proliferation Office) and accepted by the OPCW (Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) as one of about 20 qualified experts from around the world that the OPCW may call upon to assist with investigations of alleged use of chemical weapons or riot control agents as a method of warfare.
• 2008-09 Victorian Young Tall Poppy Science Award - Sandra McLaren, Earth Sciences. Sandra is a Faculty Centenary Research Fellow and earlier this year was also awarded the Dorothy Hill Medal from the Australian Academy of Science.

• L'Oreal Australia for Women in Science Fellowship - Dr Erika Cretney (Bachelor of Science, 2001)
• the Selwyn Medal of the Geological Society of Victoria, awarded to recognize significant ongoing contributions to the field of Victorian geology - Associate Professor Malcolm Wallace, Earth Sciences
• Igor Stojiljkovic Memorial Lecturer Award for outstanding contributions in the biometals field - Professor Jim Camakaris, Genetics
• First place in IBM's Master the Mainframe 2008 competition - Dharvinder Bassi, Master of Information Systems student
• ISANA Council Award for Outstanding Individual Contribution to the International Education Assoc at the ISANA International Education Association Conference - Dr Shanton Chang, Information Systems
• 2008 winner of the National Innovation Award for Science Innovation, managed by Fast Thinking Magazine and Open Universities Australia - AMSI (Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute)
• Royal Society of Victoria Research Medal in Physical Sciences (Category IV) - Professor Stephen Prawer, Physics
• 2009 Pawsey Medal for research in physics - Dr Stuart Wyithe, Physics
• The inaugural Director of the Melbourne Institute of Materials - Professor Steven Prawer, Physics
