On Wednesday 3rd December, 60 Year 9 students and their teachers attended an On Campus event at the University of Melbourne to participate in some science based activities. A pilot event as part of the In2science - Peer Mentoring in Schools Program, the idea of the day was to give students the opportunity to visit a university campus and to engage in some interesting science. This would complement the work done in the In2science program where undergraduate students work in secondary schools as role models to the students and as a scientific resource for the teachers.

On the day students participated in a range of activities including practical classes in Genetics and Chemistry. Some students learnt more about a day in the life of a Marine Biologist and others investigated techniques on how to identify fossils. After lunch students were entertained by the Physics Show, encouraging them to become involved and reflect upon the importance of physics in our everyday lives.

Feedback from attending staff and students was very positive and the tertiary institutions involved in the program LaTrobe University, the University of Melbourne and Monash University look forward to hosting another group of enthusiastic potential scientists in 2009.
